From a new generation of cell phones that send pictures and short movies, to plasma TV screens, supercomputers and the worldwide web, technological progress has led to more exciting inventions in this title of the Crafty Inventions series. Get connected to the ?information superhighway? and find out if you could live in a virtual reality. Learn about the fastest computers in the world, how special software can trick your senses and how engineers build cars on screen. Then put what you have learned into practice by making a state-of-the-art mobile phone booth, a virtual reality helmet, a strap-on microchip maze and a set of groovy CD coasters.
Plasma Confinement
Detailed and authoritative, this volume examines the essential physics underlying international research in magnetic confinement fusion. It offers readable, thorough accounts of the fundamental concepts behind methods of confining plasma at or near thermonuclear conditions. Designed for a one-or two-semester graduate-level course in plasma physics, it also represents a valuable reference for professional physicists in controlled fusion and related disciplines. Unabridged republication of the edition published by Addison-Wesley Publishing Company, Redwood City, California, 1992.

Crime Fiction
"Crime Fiction" provides a lively introduction to what is both a wide-ranging and hugely popular literary genre. Using examples from a variety of novels, short stories, films and televisions series, John Scaggs:
*presents a concise history of crime fiction - from biblical narratives to James Ellroy - broadening the genre to include revenge tragedy and the gothic novel
*explores the key sub-genres of crime fiction, such as "Rational Criminal Investigation," "The Hard-Boiled Mode," "The Police Procedural" and "Historical Crime Fiction"
*locates texts and their recurring themes and motifs in a wider social and historical context
*outlines the various critical concepts that are central to the study of crime fiction, including gender, narrative theory and film theory
*considers contemporary television series like "C.S.I.: Crime Scene Investigation" alongside the "classic" whodunnits of Agatha Christie.

The Framework of Plasma Physics
Plasma physics is a necessary part of our understanding of stellar and galactic structure. It determines the magnetospheric environment of the earth and other planets; it forms the research frontier in such areas as nuclear fusion, advanced accelerators, and high power lasers; and its applications to various industrial processes (such as computer chip manufacture) are rapidly increasing. It is thus a subject with a long list of scientific and technological applications. This book provides the scientific background for understanding such applications, but it emphasizes something else: the intrinsic scientific interest of the plasma state. It attempts to develop an understanding of this state, and of plasma behavior, as thoroughly and systematically as possible. The book was written with the graduate student in mind, but most of the material would also fit into an upper-level undergraduate course.
